How to get the best
You want the best. You have to be the best. You have to build up a reputation as being a good employer. You have to be able to quickly locate, identify and attract the best candidates in your industry. You have to work quickly. You interview twenty, make three jobs offers, only to find that your best candidates have accepted offers elsewhere. When the candidate is the best, who moves first wins.
Advertising
Will advertising find me the best candidates? It will definitely get you the corporate exposure. But will it get you the people? Assuming Mr. or Mrs. Perfect responds to your advertisement, will you find that person amongst the three thousand cv's that are obviously unsuitable? By the time you get to the Perfect CV, Mr. or Mrs. Perfect has found their job elsewhere.
How to find the best
The best approach is to
- know what you are looking for. This is the first and most important stage. Involve who needs to be involved in your company before writing the description so you don't have to constantly revise it.
- draft an accurate job description including description of the job/role, skills experience and personality you are looking for.
- Go and find that person. You can leave us to do part C. We have an extensive network of contacts. We are effective in persuading candidates, many of whom are working to come for an interview. Using a third party to make approaches to companies who you do not want to antagonize is sensible and effective. That way you get the best.
Salary Negotiation
Be aware that as the market is improving dramatically, it is important to pay market rates if you don't want your candidate to leave for the competition in six months time. Your aim should be for keeping within your budget and giving the candidate a market salary.
